"KEEPERS OF THE
NIGHT"
This costume’s fabric
inspiration was a raven.
From a distance, the bird
appears to be all black, but
upon closer examination,
there are many colors, often
iridescent. To try to catch
this feeling, I used a black
warp that slowly changed
into a deep blue. The weft
was not a black, as I had
originally planned, but
discovered that when I use a
dark blue weft, the colors
began to “pop”. Glass beads
add to the shine and depth.
The weaving structure is
basically a plain weave, but
on a Bedford cord threading.
The sleeves are Bedford
cord, but since my AFL with
its advancing sandpaper
beam, did not advance the
warp, but it just advanced
the weft. A real complicated
mess. So I switched to a
tabby or plain weave for the
body of the costume.
The prehistoric “birds”
added just the right amount
of mystery, along with the
scary black painted tree
forms: like a very dark
forest with little
moonlight. Not a place in
which you would want to
wander. Do those strange
creatures really exist in
those dark places?
